Liminal Radiance and Feelings of In-Between
Liminal Radiance and Feelings of In-Between
This sculpture is inspired by the concepts of liminal spaces and nepantla. It is the result of the exploration of the spiritual aspects found in transitional moments and the feelings they evoke.
The purpose of this art piece was to create a luminary using a CNC plasma cutter, cold forming techniques, and cold connection methods. It is wall mounted sculpture luminary that is symmetrical in its form. The surface is designed to be ornamental and is painted with a turquoise/teal and bronze/copper that gives an earthy tone look.
For this project, I chose a simple design with the intention to build upon it as I worked, taking an intuitive approach. Inspired by artists who repurpose metal scraps from junkyards, I sourced materials from the metal shop’s scrap bins. After cutting and shaping my design, I primed it with metal spray paint, then applied acrylic paints mixed with gloss Mod Podge. I added decorative elements like scrap metal, embossed aluminum foil, and plaster. To assemble the sculpture, I used rivets, glue, and copper wire, finishing by installing a light inside the back.
