Vestige of the Cosmic Race, 2025
31 x 24 x 4.75 in
wood, foam, plaster, pvc pipe, plaster gauze, air dry clay, pewter, wax, acrylic paint, and handmade pine resin varnish
This mixed media sculpture reflects on mestizo identity and the quiet tensions of cultural assimilation. As generations pass, assimilation into the dominant culture can lead to a quiet dilution of heritage, an often unspoken loss. Inspired by the 1925 essay La raza cósmica (The Cosmic Race) by Mexican intellectual José Vasconcelos.
